Alexander Tanev

Alexander TanevBudapest, Hungary, 1928 - 1996

Alexander Tanev was one of the mainstream figures in Bulgarian musical life. He first studied law at Sofia University, but then turned to music, completing the program in composition with Veselin Stoianov and piano with Galunka Belcheva at the State Academy of Music in Sofia. He was professor of composition at the State Academy until his death in 1996.

Tanev was a prolific composer in all genres. His style is characterized by a fresh wittiness, satire and sarcasm. Vocal music was one of Tanev's particular strengths, especially in having the voice imitate instrumental effects. One of the pieces introduced in this collection, Muzikata Sviri ("The Music Plays"), is a good illustration of this style.
